Integrated Multidimensional Sustainability Assessment of Energy System Transformation Pathways

Sustainable development embraces a broad spectrum of social, economic and ecological aspects. Thus, sustainable transformation process energy systems is inevitably multidimensional needs to go beyond climate impact cost considerations. An approach for an integrated interdisciplinary sustainability assessment system pathways presented here. It first integrates modeling with that focuses on life cycle-based environmental macroeconomic impacts. Then, stakeholders’ preferences respect defined indicators are inquired, which finally into comparative scenario evaluation through multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), all in one consistent framework. As illustrative example, this holistic applied the ten different strategies Germany. Applying reveals both ambitious (80%) highly (95%) carbon reduction scenarios can achieve top ranks, depending underlying respective scores other dimensions. Furthermore, research highlights increasingly dominant contribution systems’ upstream chains total impacts, rather small differences effects between identifies transition among societal segments minimization as most important stakeholder preferences.
